The Willamette River in Oregon is the setting for Maggie's Pride. When Sam Adams discovered that the orphaned boys aunt was a childhood friend and the captain of a stern-wheel steamboat, he's confident she will raise the boy as if he were her own.
Maggie Foster is happy doing what she does best pilot her old steamboat up and down the river. When she recognizes Sam, she recalls her girlish fancies about him. As they renew their friendship, she sees how much their lives have changed.
Sam cannot believe Maggie will deny her love and reject her nephew, even though she is as headstrong as ever. Wanting the best for the boy, she doggedly maintains her old stern-wheeler isn't a home for the child and insists he live with Sam.
