As Sarah reached for a cup, Carol continued, "We're waiting for Paul Thompson to arrive. He's our district manager and your new boss. He'll be outlining the company's plans for this year's Christmas promotion."
"Everyone is excited about the new line of porcelain collectibles," Sarah said.
"Here's Paul now," Richard interrupted.
Her most dazzling smile in place, Sarah turned toward the door. For a moment, she found it hard to breathe. The man entering the room was none other than her mystery man from the restaurant the previous evening. As her mind reeled, one fact surfaced, he had been ranting about her.
A homely workaholic or has major connections in the company, were phrases from his conversation that flashed through her mind.
Realizing his contempt for her, frustration and anger threatened Sarah's composure. Her new boss judged her unfit for this job without even meeting her.
When Paul entered the room, he scanned the faces, looking for his new manager. Deciding to meet this new challenge head on, Sarah walked across the room to her new boss. Tall, slender and delicately boned, Sarah Lindsey was definitely a woman hard to forget. Her femininity contrasted sharply with the severe cut of her navy suit.
When she reached Paul, her eyes locked with his. Her green eyes, almost catlike in their intensity, shot a sharp glint of anger in his direction.
Irrationally, Sarah remained momentarily transfixed by Paul's eyes. They're hazel, she thought.
Before Richard Sutton could introduce her, Paul took Sarah's hand firmly in his. "Miss Lindsey, I presume. Definitely, not dear, old Aunt Matilda," he said.
"Given the other choices, that's hardly a compliment," Sarah responded.
"It wasn't meant to be."
Unable to think of a suitable reply, Sarah concentrated on prying her hand loose from his. It was obvious, Paul recognized her from the restaurant and knew she had overheard his conversation. An unspoken challenge had been given, and Sarah was ready to accept that challenge. #
