Once in a Lifetime - Gwynne ForsterOnce in a Lifetime

July 2002!
BET/Arabesque ISBN: 1-58314-193-6

With a rambunctious four-year old daughter to support, recently divorced Alexis Stevenson, once a college teacher, takes a job as live-in home manager for wealthy businessman, Telford Harrington and his two brothers, an architect and an engineer. She deliberately omits telling Telford that until her divorce she was mistress of a home as elegant as his. Very soon, he questions her suitability for the job, for neither her behavior nor her taste are that of the average home manager. He hired her without seeing her, and their first meeting has the combustible potential of torched dynamite. It is fire meeting fire in the form of a wounded woman and a man who walks alone.

She sets out to turn that bachelor mansion into a home and encounters opposition from the middle brother, connivance from the younger one and grudging acceptance from Telford. Her daughter immediately wins the hearts of the brothers and their old male cook and forms a deep attachment to Telford, who reciprocates the child's love. Although Alexis and Telford try to obey rules of proper employer/employee relationships, the chemistry between them is too powerful and fate too persistent. But Alexis cannot follow her heart, for she is caught in a web of secrets capable of destroying any love. And one of those secrets involves Telford Harrington. It is a story of a woman's struggle for independence and self fulfillment; of a man's drive for revenge; of passion, damaging secrets; and of one horrendous lie, innocent enough in its time, but which comes back to haunt her. Spine tingling. Riveting.
