Franklin by Paulette Bourgeois and Brenda Clark (4 and up) (Scholastic) - as on the Nickelodeon TV show, Franklin is a turtle. Together with his woodland friends, Bear, Beaver, Goose, Owl and Snail, Franklin deals with the fears, joys and adventures of growing up. Subjects include the dark, thunderstorms, sleepovers, bad days, riding a bike, wanting a pet, fibbing and more. Franklin IS BOSSY - When Franklin wants to tell all his friends what they will play and how they will play, Bear and the others decide they don't want to play with Franklin because he's being too bossy.  Franklin learns the lesson of playing well with others and taking turns. Order here.

Franklin RIDES A BIKE - Franklin feels bad because his friends can all ride their bikes and Franklin still can't ride without training wheels.  Franklin believes that everything comes easily for the others but not for him.  When he remembers how his friends have all had difficulties learning different things (Badger had trouble learning to swim under water, Beaver couldn't swing on the monkey bars, and Fox couldn't hit the baseball) he realizes that they overcame it by trying again and again.  Franklin learns that some things are harder than others, and that he must never stop trying.  Order here.
