About Dr. Seuss
Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 2, 1904. Theodor's mother, Henrietta Seuss Geisel would often lull her children, Ted and his sister Marnie, to sleep with rhyming chants she remembered from her childhood. Ted would later credit his mother with his ability and love of turning rhymes into stories.

Ted left Springfield as a teenager to attend Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. There he became editor-in-chief of the Jack-O-Lantern, the school's humorous magazine. It was during this time contributing to the magazine that he began signing his name "Seuss." This was his middle name and his mother's maiden name. When Dr. Seuss left college, he went on to Oxford University in England where he met Helen Palmer, the future Mrs. Geisel. The two were married and returned to America where Helen also became a children's author and a book editor.

After his schooling, Seuss worked as a free-lance magazine cartoonist. One of his cartoons, about a spray can of pesticide called 'Flit,' was noticed by Standard Oil Company, the makers of the product. For several years he created monsterous creatures that were to be sprayed with Flit for the company's advertising.

It was on another trip across the ocean that Seuss first started to write for children. To keep himself busy during the long voyage, he wrote a poem as he listened to the rhythm of the ship's engines. He later drew pictures to illustrate the story that would become, And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street. His memories of his home town of Springfield aided him in his illustrations which is why you will see a remarkable likeness in the book of the town's Mayor, Fordis Parker. You will also see the policemen riding red motorcycles in the parade just like they did in Springfield.
