Fantastic Gifts for the Reader in Your Life - Young or Old(er)!
February 15, 2008

UPDATE October 24, 2008

Amazon KindleOprah has chosen the Kindle as her new favorite thing ever! Of course, we have been a fan of this electronic reader for some time, but we're hoping the new endorsement from this lover of books will encourage more readers to embrace this wonderful technology that allows you to keep all your favorite books, newspapers and even music with you wherever you go. The Kindle will hold 200 books with the option of adding a memory card to hold 2000! Not only will you treasure the convenience of it, but children who may feel overwhelmed or bored at the prospect of reading a book, will read now just to be able to use the Kindle. It will also tell you instantly the definition of a word just by highlighting it and hitting Look Up! YOU DO NOT NEED A COMPUTER OR THE INTERNET TO USE THE KINDLE. So you can also consider this a great gift for the older folks who don't have a computer. The wireless technology allows the downloading of material from anywhere! The Kindle is sure to be on many Christmas lists this year! Give it a look!

Boxed gift sets newly available this year are the much anticipated Harry Potter series and the Spiderwick Chronicles. Each includes all novels in the series and comes in a unique chest that will be a great addition to any collection.

Now for the even younger ones...

Leapfrog and V-tech are leaders this year in the early learning video game and computer game arena. Here area few standouts:

LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Letter Set - Under $20 this small device goes on the fridge and the child can put a letter on it and push a button to hear the name and sound of the letter or the alphabet song. The Word Whammer is the same idea, just with a few letters at a time, i.e. P E and T spell Pet. These great idea take the age old fun of letters on the fridge to new heights!

LeapFrog Leapster Learning Game Systems - these take anywhere units teach all the basic skills like spelling, math, art, music, reading and more. And with a large variety of additional games this is one electronic toy you will encourage your child to play with for years to come. The Leapster can take your child from the early learning age of 2 or 3 right through the fourth grade.

LeapFrog Clickstart My First Computer is another excellent early learning tool that kids and parents will love. The Clickstart is a keyboard (with mouse attached) that plugs into your tv to act as a screen. This is a great introduction to the letters on a keyboard virtually identical to the grown-ups computer!

The V-tech V.Smile TV Learning and the Pocket Learning systems work in the same way and also come very highly rated by educators and parents!

Software...
It goes without saying that the Reader Rabbit and Jumpstart series of early learning software games are excellent for the early grade levels as well as the pre-school age group. We always recommend these for our young readers!

Be sure to bring home some favorite characters like Dora, Diego, Blue's Clues, Sesame Street, Veggie Tales and Disney Princesses and Disney Fairies. Children love to learn with their favorite characters, and learning on the computer is so fast and easy that parents will be equally delighted with the results!

For the slightly older kids, Magic School Bus and Magic Tree House adventures are timeless!

Enter A World of Fairy Fun and Imagination!

A world of delight awaits you and the little one in your life when you enter into the Fairy realm! Tinker Bell and all her friends and their stories will capture imaginations this winter season as they take your child on adventures in nature. And the fun doesn't stop there! Build your own fairy houses together and get ready to make some lasting memories. (By the way: the little fairy in the bookmark at left is Tom and Diane's granddaughter Ckloe in one of the Disney Fairies' costumes!)

TLT's Bookstore

We have recently updated and restructured our Bestsellers page to include more titles in more categories! Also, due to the outstanding success of our 100 Years of Teddy Bears page, we will be doing many more of these specialty pages in the coming weeks! Some of the planned topics include: 40 Years of Star Trek; favorite Anime cartoon characters (in books and on DVD!); and some of our favorite early reading books for those not-quite-ready-for-school readers. If you would like to see a topic covered in our bookstore, email Diane with your suggestions. We love hearing from our readers!

E-mail scams and identity theft!
see Covering Computing for more...

For anyone who has received an e-mail that appears to come from The Literary Times, but is advertising the sale of a product - like software - please note that these messages are NOT from us! This is just another scam, another way for spammers to try to get you to read their messages. TLT does not spam, nor do we bother our readers with unwanted solicitations.

New Computer/Video Game Section Comes to the Bookstore

In an effort to combine education with fun, TLT has authorized a new section to the bookstore which will be maintained and operated by a 13-year-old budding entrepreneur! Check out this brand new section and watch for daily updates and increasing inventory.
