Saira has 15 years civil litigation experience. Saira specialized in Personal Injury and Actions Against the Police for 12 years where she was a member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers and Police Action Lawyers Group

She represented families and individuals, in high profile sensitive matters such as deaths in custody and other police failures, dealt with through the police complaints procedure and civil claims. These claims included potential Judicial Reviews.

Saira also worked as a Government lawyer at the Government Legal Department representing various Government Departments, predominantly the Home Office in unlawful detention claims arising out of immigration detention. Saira has a sound understanding of the importance of holding a public body to account and the workings of the Government.  

Saira has been with TLT almost two years working on Public Inquiries. She has represented Core Participants preparing responses to the Infected Blood Inquiry’s Rule 9 requests in drafting complex and detailed witness statements for some high profile witnesses, working closely with appointed Kings Counsel. Currently Saira is on a secondment to the Undercover Policing Inquiry (UCPI) with SC clearance where she is playing a key role in meeting the Inquiry’s tight deadlines and timescales to ensure the Inquiry completes it’s investigation to its intended target date.

Before her secondment to UCPI Saira worked on the Covid Inquiry. She was part of the Team representing BEIS and her role was in assisting the client in drafting a Corporate Statement. This involved working closely with the client and Counsel and review of complex Government documents.

Experience

  • Saira recently settled a long standing mesothelioma and noise induced hearing loss case against the Government.
  • Saira also recently successfully defended a breach of Human Rights claim against the Home Office at Trial where the issue of the detainees conditions of detention were litigated.
  • Saira prepared and submitted a witness statement for a former Health Minister in response to a Rule 9 from the Infected Blood Inquiry. At UCPI Saira has been heavily involved in the preparation of witness packs and restriction order work, working to tight deadlines and leading on the Managers workstream.
  • Saira also does Costs work on behalf of the Inquiry assessing bills from legal representatives. Saira has also been part of a team responsible for implementing adequate training and induction for the Inquiry and has played  a key role in setting up a Knowledge Hub on the Inquiry Intranet page.
