National law firm TLT has provided real estate advice to longstanding client, Low Carbon, on the Gate Burton Energy Park, which the Secretary of State granted a Development Consent Order (DCO) for on Friday 12 July 2024.
The project, one of three schemes to receive consent from the new government last Friday, represents one of the first solar schemes to successfully receive approval through the DCO process.
When constructed, the scheme will see the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) generating panels and on-site energy storage facilities and grid connection infrastructure and will allow for the generation, storage, and export of up to 500 MW electrical generation capacity which will power approximately 160,000 homes. The scheme will also deliver environmental benefits, including significant biodiversity net gain across the site.
TLT provided real estate advice which covered all land assembly elements and advised on multiple options for lease together with associated due diligence for the main site which covers approximately 1,690 acres. Additionally, TLT advised on easements required for the 7.5km cable route to the Cottam National Grid Substation.
The team was led over the past 5 years of working on Gate Burton by real estate future energy partner Matt Grimwood, with support from associates Ellie Nicole-Davis, Georgina Davey and Tsz Wo Siu.
Mike Rutgers, Managing Director of UK Development at Low Carbon commented: “The approval of this scheme is a step on the journey to decarbonising the UK electricity grid in the near term and is a positive statement by the new government. Projects such as these are progressed by teams of people across multiple disciplines and our longstanding relationship with Matt and the team at TLT meant that we could work effectively and seamlessly together to advance this exciting project’’
Real Estate Future Energy partner Matt Grimwood added: “We have been acting for Low Carbon since 2012, so it has been particularly rewarding to help such a longstanding client in delivering a groundbreaking scheme in what is a seminal moment for the UK energy sector. This represents a highly positive development for the UK’s future energy market and is a testament to the quality of projects that Low Carbon develops and its commitment to the sector. We are incredibly proud to work with such forward-thinking organisations, who are at the forefront of contributing to the UK’s net-zero ambitions.“
