National law firm TLT has completed two significant deals on behalf of its longstanding client, leading renewables company Low Carbon, demonstrating TLT’s expertise in the clean energy sector.

TLT advised on the sale of the large DCO project Gate Burton, located in Lincolnshire, to EDF Renewables. This project was one of three schemes to be granted a Development Consent Order (DCO) by the Secretary of State in 2024 and TLT previously provided real estate advice on all land assembly elements and on multiple options for lease together with associated due diligence for the main site.

The transaction represents the next step towards the generation, storage, and export of up to 500 MW electrical generation capacity which will power approximately 160,000 homes.

In addition to the Gate Burton project, TLT also recently advised on the sale of a 435 MW solar and battery portfolio from Low Carbon to global integrated energy company TotalEnergies. All of the projects are at an advanced stage of development and have formed part of Low Carbon’s pipeline of solar, onshore wind and battery projects, standing at more than 16 GW globally.

The projects acquired by TotalEnergies are expected to be operational by 2028 and will produce more than 350 GWh per year of renewable electricity, equivalent to the electricity consumption of around 100,000 UK households annually.

TLT advised on the corporate, property and planning aspects of both transactions. The Corporate Team was led by Corporate Future Energy Partner Kay Hobbs, with support from Senior Associate Tom Lawrence and trainee Lucy Cuddihee. The Property and Planning Teams were led by Partner Matt Grimwood which involved significant contributions across both teams and included Managing Associate John Arthur and Senior Associate Claire James from our Planning Team and Tsz Wo Siu, Kim Tomlins and Ellie-Nicole Davies from our Real Estate Team.

These transactions follow a successful year for TLT’s Corporate Future Energy Team during which it was ranked in the top ten most influential law firms in clean energy M&A worldwide in Clean Energy Pipeline’s 2025 Clean Energy Legal League Table.

They also follow significant investments made by TLT into its capabilities in the future energy and planning arena with the addition of a team of 29 lawyers from Broadfield who will be joining the firm throughout 2025.

Kay Hobbs, Partner in TLT’s Corporate Future Energy team commented: “It is always a pleasure to support a long-term client on projects which will have a strong, measurable impact on the UK’s race to achieve net-zero. The smooth completion of these transactions is a real testament to the strength, depth and expertise of the Low Carbon team and, having advised on these projects since 2020, to our status as 1st tier advisers in the market.

“Despite some ongoing uncertainty in the future energy sector, the financial year is off to a lively start, and these transactions demonstrate that the market remains robust and healthy.”

Paul Allam, Investment Director at Low Carbon said: “We are very pleased to have finalised these recent transactions, both of which are making an impressive commitment to building renewable infrastructure and which see Low Carbon reinforce its track record for developing renewable assets of the highest quality.

“As long-term clients of TLT, we are well aware of the excellent advice that it provides. Their team’s outstanding knowledge, professionalism and forward-thinking approach more than vindicates our decision to work with them.”
