Maria Connolly, partner and head of TLT’s pioneering future energy team, has been named as a Green Ambassador by The Legal 500 in recognition of her exceptional leadership in driving sustainability within the legal sector. This prestigious accolade underscores Maria’s instrumental role in advancing green initiatives and championing sustainable practices across industries.
Maria was identified as a Green Ambassador as part of research conducted by The Legal 500, published in legal trade publication Legal Business, highlighting individuals who have shown exceptionally strong engagement with sustainability matters. Maria is a part of a cohort of just 44 individuals in the UK singled out as playing a key role in supporting clients with sustainability-related initiatives.
Maria joined TLT in 1997, and since then has been instrumental in building and developing the firm’s nationally recognised future energy practice. She has worked on several hundred wind, solar, biomass and hydro projects and pathfinder multi-technology, electric vehicle charging and energy storage projects. She has also spearheaded TLT's "first-of-a-kind" strategy, which aims to drive transition to an improved energy system by broadening the availability and accessibility of contributing technologies.
Under Maria’s leadership, TLT has been recognised with a string of awards in recent years, including the prestigious Lloyds Bank Sustainable Business of the Year Award at the edie Awards 2023 and Best Law Firm for Eco-Friendliness at the Legal Cheek Awards 2023. The firm has also had ambitious targets to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 verified by the Science Based Targets initiative.
In addition to Maria’s nomination, TLT was included in 2025 Legal 500 Green Guides, further highlighting the firm’s commitment to sustainability, cementing its position as an exceptional legal advisor to renewable energy projects and demonstrating its commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.
The annual Green Guide - the first worldwide guide to recognise the top law firms advising on issues around climate change, governance and sustainability. This is the third consecutive year TLT has featured in the guide and follows a year in which the firm has demonstrated excellence in this field by:
Been awarded a Climate Change ‘B’ score from CDP (formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project) - above the average score for the professional services sector (‘C’);
Moved into a new office in Manchester – Eden – one of the UK’s most sustainable office buildings;
Been ranked in the top three most active global law firms for clean energy M&A deals in Clean Energy Pipeline’s 2024 Clean Energy Legal League Table.
Commenting on the achievement, Maria said: “Over the past year, our position as a leading global adviser to the future energy sector and our commitment to sustainability have been demonstrated over and again, with another placement in the Legal 500 Green Guide further cementing our status. We are proud to be continually driving sustainable practice, in collaboration with colleagues, clients, local communities and our partner organisations.
“On a personal level, I am proud to be named as a ‘Green Ambassador’. It is always rewarding to receive personal accolades, but I feel it is a testament to the strength of the future energy team, who are continuing to deliver for our clients, and helping pave the way to a greener future.”
The announcement follows another successful year for TLT’s future energy team, which saw the team perform strongly in the latest Legal 500 2025 directory rankings, securing a top-tier ranking in the South West.
