TLT has been highly commended for the Litigation Team of the Year Award at The Lawyer Awards 2024.

The accolade was awarded to TLT’s financial services disputes and investigations team that acted for Barclays in the high-profile and widely reported case of Fiona Philipp v Barclays Bank UK PLC. The case, was expedited to a hearing before the Supreme Court in 2023, where Barclays was successful in its appeal. This was the first case in which the Courts have considered the application of the Quincecare duty in the context of a paying bank’s obligations to its customers following an Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud.

The matter was led by partner Clare Stothard and managing associate Rupal Nathwani, and has significant industry importance, providing clarity and certainty as to the relationship between a bank and its customer in respect of authorised payment transactions.

Jonathan Hoey, partner and head of banking and financial services litigation at TLT commented: “It’s an honour to have our work recognised on a national platform at this year’s Lawyer Awards. The team supported Barclays from the outset on this case, all the way through to the hearing before the Supreme Court. Being involved in a dispute, which has resulted in a significant judgment offering further clarity for the financial services sector, truly demonstrates the high calibre and quality of work being delivered by the firm and our financial disputes and investigations team. Special congratulations to Clare and Rupal who led on this and huge thanks to the whole team involved in this case.”
