UK law firm TLT has retained a ‘B’ score for good environmental management, from CDP for the third consecutive year.
The CDP is an independent, global non-profit that runs the world’s leading environmental disclosure platform. The most recent disclosure questionnaire featured a number of key changes intended to encourage a more holistic and balanced disclosure across different environmental issues and challenge businesses to take more effective action across the whole spectrum of environmental issues.
TLT has maintained a ‘B’ score, indicating that the firm is “taking co-ordinated action on environmental issues”. This demonstrates TLT’s ongoing commitment to environmental management and consistency in delivering results.
Following another record year of disclosure, more than 24,800 corporates were scored by CDP in 2024, assessing their transparency and action as they work to integrate environmentally-friendly decisions into their business models.
CDP scoring provides a snapshot of a company’s disclosure and environmental performance and plays an important role in keeping companies on a journey of continuous improvement. To achieve a ‘B’ score, companies must “have addressed the environmental impacts of their business and ensure good environmental management.”
Companies are assessed and scored across four consecutive levels representing the steps a company moves through as it progresses towards the highest level of environmental stewardship: Disclosure (D-/D score); Awareness (C-/C score); Management (B-/B score); Leadership (A-/A score).
TLT’s data will be added to the CDP’s comprehensive inventory of self-reported environmental data and will be used to help to drive action through greater transparency.
The CDP scoring is the latest in a series of achievements for TLT’s environmental strategy including moving into Eden, in Manchester – one of the UK’s most sustainable office buildings - and being ranked in the top three most active global law firms for clean energy M&A deals in Clean Energy Pipeline’s 2024 Clean Energy Legal League Table. Maria Connolly, partner and head of TLT’s pioneering future energy team, has also been named as a Green Ambassador by The Legal 500 in recognition of her exceptional leadership in driving sustainability within the legal sector.
The firm has also had its net-zero target approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and in 2024, achieved its near-term scope 1 and 2 market-based emissions reduction target, six years early, with an 88% reduction to date.
Maria Connolly, partner and executive board member who sponsors sustainability at TLT said: “TLT is committed to transparency in our sustainability strategy – by understanding and declaring our environmental impact, we can continue to effectively drive action and improve our green credentials.
“This year’s CDP questionnaire was more detailed and rigorous, and so we are particularly proud to have retained our ‘B’ score. Not only does it demonstrate our consistency and commitment to action, but it also places us at the forefront of the professional services industry, cementing our reputation as sustainability leaders.
“Improving sustainability is a constant process, and the coming year will see further focus on our supply chain, tackling the source of the majority of TLT emissions. The entire firm, from the boardroom to our employee-led sustainability forums is on-board with our ambitions and we look forward to continuing our improvement into 2025 and beyond.”
Simon Fischweicher, Chief Delivery Officer at the CDP added: “As the founder of environmental reporting, CDP is dedicated to building a world where people, planet and profit are truly balanced. We greatly appreciate the support of TLT in our efforts to continue pioneering transparency and powering corporate environmental action. Transparency drives action at all levels. Within two years of an investor request, companies disclosing through CDP reduce their direct emissions by 7-10%.
“Disclosure is far more than a box to tick. It’s a tool to see clearly, act decisively and create change. If we are to solve the environmental crisis, disclosure data must be a tool every organization – large or small – has in their kit. Transparent disclosure holds the key, meaning that now this commitment from TLT is more important than ever. "
