TLT’s head of licensing in Scotland, Stephen McGowan has been nominated for the Lawyer of the Year award at the Scottish Legal Awards 2024.

Now in their 11th year, the annual awards bring together industry experience and market knowledge to recognise the greatest achievements in the Scottish legal industry.

Stephen joined TLT in 2012 and, since then, has played a central part in building the licensing team in Scotland into “a highly regarded team” according to Chambers 2023.

Stephen’s nomination reflects his position as a recognised and esteemed voice at the very highest levels of local authority and government and as an expert in licensing law, both in Scotland, and across the UK. He is the only solicitor to have given evidence to the Scottish Parliament on both alcohol and gambling law and has appeared at licensing boards all over Scotland securing a number of high-profile licences over many years. He is also a prolific author in the field of licensing law, with scores of articles and several legal textbooks to his name.

Stephen commented: “I am very proud to have been nominated for this award and feel that it represents well deserved recognition for our entire licensing team, which has gone from strength-to-strength in recent years. I would like to extend my thanks to both my colleagues and my clients, who continue to deliver for the Scottish hospitality industry, despite ongoing challenges, and without whom, this nomination would not have happened.”

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Glasgow on 19 September.
