Stephen McGowan, partner and head of licensing in Scotland at national law firm TLT has been named ‘Lawyer of the Year’ at the Scottish Legal Awards.
Now in their 21st year, the annual awards bring together industry experience and market knowledge to recognise the greatest achievements in the Scottish legal industry.
Stephen joined TLT in 2012 and, since then, has played a central part in building the licensing team in Scotland into “a highly regarded team” according to Chambers 2023.
Stephen’s victory reflects his credentials as an expert in licensing law in Scotland, and across the UK, who is recognised at the very highest levels of local authority and government. It is also a recognition of his work on some of the most significant and complex licensing matters in Scotland and his contribution to the development and growth of hospitality and retail businesses in the region.
Spearheaded by Stephen’s achievements and expertise, TLT’s licensing team has grown to become the largest in Scotland, advising a wide range of clients across a number of sectors. In his career, Stephen has curated strong and in-depth relationships with clients, leading to TLT representing and appearing at hearings for licence applicants across Scotland. Under Stephen’s leadership, TLT’s licensing team has been continuously ranked Band 1 in the Legal 500 and Chambers rankings.
Commenting on his victory, Stephen said: “I am incredibly proud to have received this award and feel that it is just reward for the hard-work of our entire Scottish licensing team, which continues to go from strength-to-strength.
“I would like to take the opportunity to thank both my colleagues and my clients, who have made this recognition possible and who continue to deliver day after day for the Scottish hospitality industry.”
