TLT won the real estate category at last year’s awards, and this year’s nomination follows another remarkable year for the team. TLT has seen strong demand from new and existing clients for the firm’s specialist real estate expertise, and the team has advised on a number of high profile deals that are shaping the Scottish property market. Recent strategic hires include partner Stacey Cassidy.
TLT has also been nominated for the Excellence in Client Care award, having risen to the challenge of supporting the hospitality industry through the existential threat posed by Covid-19. Scotland’s largest licensing team worked tirelessly and closely with the Scottish government, industry bodies and operators to support the sector during the pandemic and now in its recovery.
As part of this effort, key team members were embedded in the highest levels of Scottish government and trade associations to provide unparalleled access, insight and influence for the firm’s clients, sitting on the Scottish Government Hospitality Task Force, Scottish Government Background Music Advisory Group and Night Time Industry Association Scottish regional commission.
The team’s advice and interventions, sometimes offered on a pro bono basis, saved dozens of businesses and an even greater number of jobs and livelihoods.
Licensing partner Caroline Loudon has also been recognised with an individual nomination for Lawyer of the Year. In a cataclysmic year for the leisure sector, she played a crucial role on the Scottish government’s Hospitality Task Force and led the charge in challenging and changing Covid-19 regulations and industry guidance as a key interlocutor with Holyrood. She has also acted on several high profile licensing cases and obtained difficult licences for her clients.
Caroline was also named a Hospitality Hero by DRAM Magazine in November 2020.
John Paul Sheridan, partner and location head for TLT in Scotland, says: “After such a challenging year for businesses, it is great that the team’s hard work can be recognised by these nominations. They really have gone above and beyond for our clients – but not only that, they have seen the bigger picture and the vital role that we as lawyers can play when the Scottish business community is relying on government policy to survive.
“I wish the real estate and licensing teams, and Caroline – for whom being a first-class lawyer is not just a job but a vocation – the best of luck on the night, and congratulations to all nominees.”
