Behind the doors of a TLT assessment centre

As many will know, securing a training contract is not always a straightforward process. The journey can present personal challenges to overcome, particularly if you are receiving negative outcome emails. For those who haven’t applied for a training contract yet, you may have heard others’ stories that have made the process seem daunting and intimidating. As someone who has experienced this firsthand and obtained a training contract, I believe that determination and resilience are key to success.

When I applied to TLT’s training contract this year, it was for the second time. Following the submission of my initial written application in 2024, I was invited to the assessment centre but was not successful. Whilst I was disheartened by the result, I embraced the feedback as an opportunity to improve and was motivated to return the next year stronger.

I made sure that I was thoroughly prepared for this year’s assessment centre. I reached out to others who had been through the process and asked them to share their experience. I sought guidance from colleagues and used this to accompany the feedback I received to develop my approach to the day. Most importantly, I spent a lot of time researching TLT and increasing my holistic knowledge of the firm’s work and goals. Whilst doing this, I considered how I aligned with TLT to showcase how I was the right fit for the firm. My preparation gave me confidence for the assessment centre, as I felt ready for the challenge. For example, my research furthered my understanding of commercial issues, which I effectively showed awareness of throughout each component of the assessment. In my interview, I used my preparation to demonstrate my skills and what I could offer TLT as a trainee solicitor.

After I left the assessment, it took several days to unwind and stop thinking about how I had done. Fortunately, I had the excitement of attending Glastonbury Festival to distract me! Whilst I was there, I received a phone call from Marcus in Early Careers to let me know that TLT was offering me the training contract. I was lost for words – a definite pinch me moment. When you have invested your time and effort to achieve your goals, getting what you set out to accomplish is an incredible feeling. I am proud of myself and very thankful to my family, friends, and colleagues who supported me in getting my training contract. I cannot wait to start and progress my legal career at TLT.
