UK law firms launch joint training contract programme in partnership with Barclays

The Barclays Joint Training Contract Scheme (BJTCS) will offer those who have completed the Legal Practice Course (LPC) the rare opportunity to undertake half of their training contract with TLT or Simmons and Simmons and the other with Barclays[1]. The recruitment process will be supported by SEO London, alongside Bright Network and Aspiring Solicitors.

By giving them exposure to two leading UK law firms and one of the most recognised financial institutions in the country, the innovative programme will enhance the trainees’ knowledge and understanding of the legal sector, whilst helping them stand out from a competitive legal crowd.

At the end of the programme, trainees will be able to apply for any open, newly qualified positions that may be available at either Barclays or their chosen law firm. The initial intake for the programme will be two London-based trainees – one at TLT and one at Simmons & Simmons in September 2023. Two more trainees will take part in March 2024.

Partner at TLT, Ed Fiddick, who is leading the programme at the firm, commented: “Investing in our trainees and supporting their growth and development is central to the firm’s strategy to 2025. We’re delighted to be part of this unique training contract programme. At TLT, challenging convention is one of our values and we are delighted to put that into practice again alongside Barclays. We’re also focused on giving our young lawyers new opportunities to explore different areas of law and to work closely with our clients - to help them find what they are passionate about and how they want to specialise. This scheme will offer trainees the exceptional opportunity to experience working in a law firm and as part of a great in-house team, and we really look forward to working with the successful candidates joining this pioneering programme”.

Disputes & Investigations partner at Simmons & Simmons, Tim Boyce, said: “We are pleased to be a part of such an important initiative together with TLT and Barclays. Trainees play a significant role in shaping the future of law firms and to be able to provide them with this exceptional opportunity reflects the firm’s commitment to being a next generation law firm. The scheme will serve as an excellent platform for trainees to experience what it’s like to be part of a law firm working closely with a global financial institution who are leaders in their field.

David Jackson, General Counsel for Corporate Centre at Barclays, commented: “This exciting new training programme aligns with our ongoing focus on developing a diverse legal function and strengthening an inclusive culture. We are enthusiastic about collaborating with Simmons & Simmons and TLT to open up a different and innovative pathway into the legal profession that attracts the very best talent. Building partnerships and investing in people are core to what we do here at Barclays. I look forward to welcoming the successful trainees”.
