Contract dispute management

At TLT, we understand that contract disputes often arise from misaligned expectations, unclear terms, or breakdowns in commercial relationships and can significantly impact business operations, relationships, and profitability.

Our specialist Commercial Dispute Resolution team has extensive experience of complex contractual and supply chain disputes. We regularly advise on matters regarding the interpretation and enforcement of contract terms, and we provide practical, commercial solutions ranging from advice in the first stages of underperformance through to the early stages of disagreement (where our pragmatic approach tackles the problem head on) through to court proceedings and enforcement.

Our Commercial Dispute Resolution lawyers also bring deep sector knowledge and a proactive mindset to help clients navigate contract management issues with confidence. We don't just provide legal advice - we become strategic partners, working seamlessly with in-house counsel and commercial and delivery teams to understand operational complexities and commercial priorities - we tailor our advice and strategy accordingly. Whether the goal is to preserve a key relationship, to rescue and reset a project or enforce contractual rights, we help clients make informed decisions that align with their broader business strategy.

Experience

  • Advising a central government department in relation to the early exit and termination of the contract of a key supplier involved in the delivery of critical national infrastructure. This sensitive and high-profile work involved very complex and technical negotiations with a large international company holding significant bargaining power and required a careful balance to be struck between achieving value for money and ensuring timely delivery.
  • Acting for several UK police forces on the delayed implementation of bespoke and fully integrated 999 call-handling systems. TLT developed a robust strategy through which the police forces have sought to recover millions of pounds of public funds by way of damages and/or contractual repayments.
  • Worked with a central government department on implementing a bespoke IT solution after the supplier failed to deliver on time or meet contractual standards. Collaborated with the client’s team, plus external advisers, to protect the client’s position while pushing for timely delivery. This involved contractual levers such as default notices and a complex rectification plan, requiring buy-in and support from multiple stakeholders.
