Matthew Grimwood

Having dedicated his entire career to the Future Energy industry, Matthew has been at the vanguard of TLT’s “first of a kind” strategy which aims to drive transition to an improved energy system by broadening the availability and accessibility of contributing technologies. 

Matthew has acted for developers, funders and landowners in connection with several hundred wind, solar, battery, biomass, hydro, anaerobic digestion and other waste to energy projects. As well as working extensively on the property arrangements for electric vehicles in recent years.

Highlights have included acting on 3 out of the first 8 battery storage projects in the UK to be successful in the enhanced frequency response tender, leading a number of client service teams driving the growth of subsidy free solar including some of the first NSIPs (Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects) in the UK, acting on the first electric forecourt in the world to be delivered at Braintree, Essex and advising on the formulation and roll out of a suite of documentation required for the introduction of high powered electric vehicle charging points across the UK’s motorway service network.

Matthew also leads our agricultural practice, with a particular focus on its interrelationship with sustainability and climate change. Matthew has wide-ranging experience in dealing with hydroponics schemes and has dealt with the acquisition, implementation and funding of some of the first schemes in the UK.

Across the technologies, he provides strategic advice on the structuring of transactions, due diligence, funding issues and the drafting and negotiation of a wide range of bespoke documentation.

In addition , Matthew has extensive experience in secured lending recoveries dealing with all aspects of insolvency transactions including fixed charge receivers and administration, often involving large portfolios. As well as being on secondment at one of the UK's largest renewable energy suppliers, Matthew has also been on secondment at a major retailer dealing with a large scale estate and handling a range of commercial landlord and tenant work, advising on acquisitions, disposals and project related work.

Matthew has been appointed as a member of the Management Board for Redcliffe & Temple BID (Business Improvement District) and plays a leading role in TLT’s contribution to the Chancery Lane Project, which looks to promote legal work being undertaken in a way which enables solutions to climate change.  Matthew is also a regular speaker at industry events on topics such as subsidy-free project modelling, electric vehicle charging infrastructure and multi-technology projects.

Matthew trained at TLT, qualified as a solicitor in 2009, became an associate in 2014 and a partner in 2017.
